Managing rangelands for Multiple Benefits in Bhutan


Three-day national consultation workshop is in progress tonational decision makers and national partners of the rangelands intervention on need for policy harmonization and institutional coordination; review the objectives, outcomes of national/sectoral policy, and identify mandates, roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders in Bhutan. The opening of the workshop was graced by the Hon’ble Dasho Secretary, National Land Commission Secretariat.

The workshop will identify policy and institutional gaps for managing rangelands for multiple benefits, and appropriate policy changes and project interventions will be recommended for Bhutan. In addition, about 20 key officials from the Department of Livestock, National Land Commission Secretariat, and other key stakeholders will be sensitized on multi-functionalities of rangelands, management tools and approaches. Officials from the Department of Energy, Menjong Sorig Pharmaceuticals Corporation Limited, Department of Water, Department of Tourism, National Statistics Bureau, Department of Forest and Park Services, Dzongkhag Tshogde Thrizin, District Livestock Officer and Gewog Livestock from Local Government, Chairman of the Bhutan yak Federation (BYF), and yak herders attended the workshop.

The workshop was organized jointly by the Department of Livestock and National Land Commission Secretariat in collaboration and fund supports from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) from 22 to 24 August 2003 at Paro dzongkhag.
