𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬, 𝐉𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐧 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐤

𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟒, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒: Dr. Kaku Yoshihiro and Dr. Unsil Park, Senior Researchers from Japan’s National Institute of Infectious Diseases, are in Bhutan for a 5-day visit. This afternoon, they extended a courtesy visit to the Offtg. Director of the Department of Livestock, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. Their visit marks a significant step in the ongoing research collaboration between Bhutan’s National Centre for Animal Health, Royal Centre for Disease Control, and Japan’s National Institute of Infectious Diseases. The research activities undertaken are in the following areas:

★ Anthrax prevalence and distribution in the country;

★ Rabies antibody titration in free-roaming dogs and pet dogs in rabies endemic and rabies free areas;
★ Screening of bats for zoonotic agents;
★ Sero-surveillance for Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) in the goat population;

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Royal Government of Bhutan hereby notifies the general public that ASF outbreak has been confirmed on February 11, 2024 in a backyard pig farm at Bangyul village in Dungmaed Gewog under Pemagatshel Dzongkhag.

In view of this, the Department of Livestock would like to request for heightened vigilance and awareness to farmers on the need to step up biosecurity in the piggery farms in the Dzongkhags. Also, the Department earnestly requests all citizens to immediately report illegal import of pork or pork products; or any illness or suspicious deaths in domestic or wild pigs to the nearest livestock extension centers or Bhutan Food and Drug Authority (BFDA) office or through 𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐥-𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝟏𝟐𝟒𝟒 (𝐃𝐨𝐋) 𝐨𝐫 𝟏𝟓𝟓𝟓 (𝐁𝐅𝐃𝐀).
