The establishment of the Nakulu Dog Shelter is a crucial component of the NADPM & RCP program’s dog population management strategy, specifically aimed at addressing the issue of aggressive free-roaming dogs. The Department of Livestock, having registered the two-acre land for this purpose, collaborated with a group of dedicated animal lovers led by Zeus for stray & homeless dog to assume responsibility for the welfare of dogs.

The Nakulu dog shelter consists of four enclosures with three dogs kennel in each enclosure with a capacity to accommodate over 400 dogs. The shelter also has isolation facility for sick, weak and senile dogs. There are approximately 360 dogs in the shelter as of now and are all sterilized and vaccinated. The shelter has been operational for last seven months, incurring an approximate monthly expense of Nu. 300,000 to sustain and care for the current population of dogs. The Department of Livestock has assumed the responsibilities of providing health care for these dogs in the shelter.
